What is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any issue involving the teeth or gums that requires immediate attention to stop pain, bleeding, or prevent further complications. Some common dental emergencies include sudden, severe toothache; a chipped, cracked, or broken tooth; a knocked-out tooth (avulsed tooth); facial swelling or a dental abscess; lost crowns, fillings, or veneers; bleeding from the gums or mouth; and injuries resulting from accidents or falls. If you’re unsure whether your issue counts as a dental emergency, give us a call and we’ll advise you.

What are the benefits of having Emergency Dental Service treatment?

Prompt Pain Relief

Emergency dental treatment can quickly alleviate severe pain caused by toothaches, infections, or trauma, helping patients feel more comfortable and reducing the risk of complications from untreated issues.

Prevents Further Damage

By addressing dental emergencies early, such as chipped or broken teeth, swelling, or infection, patients can avoid more serious damage that may require extensive or costly treatment in the future.

Protects Long-Term Oral Health

Receiving immediate care can help save teeth at risk, prevent the spread of infection, and preserve overall oral health, supporting better long-term outcomes and reducing the likelihood of tooth loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

A dental emergency includes any issue that causes severe pain, bleeding, swelling, or damage to teeth or gums. Common examples are toothaches, knocked-out or broken teeth, dental abscesses, and injuries following trauma.
Yes. We aim to offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies whenever possible. Please call us as early as you can so we can prioritise your care and relieve your discomfort quickly. Please note: We are only open Monday to Friday. If your emergency occurs outside of our opening hours, please contact NHS 111 or your local out-of-hours dental service.
If a tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, store it in milk or saliva and contact us immediately — time is critical to save the tooth.
Absolutely. We welcome both registered and non-registered patients for emergency dental care. Our team will do their best to help you, regardless of whether you’re already one of our patients.
Emergency appointments focus on relieving pain and stabilising the issue. In some cases, follow-up treatment may be required (e.g. root canal, extraction, or permanent restoration), and we will clearly explain your next steps.
